A lawn square is the focal point of the grand design for renewal of the Kanagawa Institute of Technology campus. This laboratory and exhibition space occupies one part the square, built with the objective of showcasing promising output of the institute’s basic research programs. The building plan takes a hexagonal shape—fitting with the design of the square, providing ease of access from several directions, and enhancing visual impact. The building’s height was designed to match that of the two-story pilotis used as a common motif in the surrounding buildings. The interior attains transparency and connection with the outside thanks to the glass curtain wall, and a structure in which the six inner columns bear substantial load and exterior columns are kept to a 165mm diameter. This transparency naturally draws the attention of passersby to exhibits and activities inside.
