This new-drug research facility is located in the Watarase Yusuichi wetland, an area registered under the 1971 Ramsar Convention international wetlands treaty. It comprises Laboratory 1, where drug discovery research is carried out, and a central square housing administrative and staff welfare-related facilities. The facility includes spaces designed to stimulate communication and enhance focused work activities, to boost users’ capacity to generate ideas. It has a renewable energy heat pump that combines a hydrothermal air conditioning system in the central square with the Laboratory 1 hot water supply system, which uses renewable energy. Compared with an air-cooled system, this air conditioning allows for an annual cut of some 28% in primary energy consumption. The system combines a heat-source water loop, underground heating coils in the hollow spaces among the building’s piles, and the use of hot and cold waste heat.
