Achieving 3D sound for multiple listeners simultaneously

OPSODIS is 3D sound technology developed in collaboration with the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, University of Southampton, United Kingdom internationally known for its work in fields such as noise and vibration control, audio, and hearing medical treatment.

In principle, multichannel methods that have evolved from monaural to stereo and 5.1 surround sound can provide 3D sound to only one listener regardless of how many channels are added. In contrast, OPSODIS is a multichannel method based on an entirely different principle that independently controls the sounds arriving at the left and right ears of a listener. It achieves 3D sound beyond multichannel methods with a small number of channels (2 or 3). By adopting a speaker distribution optimized for sound frequency, OPSODIS (Optimal SOurce DIStribution) can reproduce the spatial information of sound in a highly efficient manner while also providing the same 3D sound to multiple listeners simultaneously.

OPSODIS was originally a sound design technology for concert halls, studios, etc. that came to be used as design support technology for verifying (visualizing) beforehand the acoustic performance of a space at the design stage. However, the special qualities of OPSODIS, i.e., its ability to handle multiple listeners simultaneously and its real time characteristics, made other developments possible. Typical of these are applications to architectural space such as mini-theater/presentation-room sound equipment that must handle multiple listeners, performer support technology for simulating the experience of performing (solo or ensemble) in a real concert hall while being in an inorganic rehearsal room, and sound equipment for theater VIP rooms that can provide a highly realistic experience.

OPSODIS is a superior technology that is attracting attention not only in the architecture industry but in the audio industry too. Through open innovation based on collaboration between industry and academia and between different industries, we aim to establish a new world standard for sound technology (like air and water) by providing the pleasure of listening beyond industry boundaries from high-end audio and home theater to architectural sound equipment.
